With an air of excitement in all four corners of the racecourse; high-class thoroughbred racing, hospitality & free family entertainment combines to bring you one of Auckland's favourite occasions - the SkyCity New Year's Day Races

This is an event where no one misses out on the fun.

Iconic to Auckland’s holiday calendar, the SkyCity New Year's Day Races offer a winning trifecta of high-class thoroughbred racing, free family entertainment & tradition.  Keep reading to learn more about the event! 

Event schedule*

11.00am -  Racecourse gates open & free children's entertainment begins

11.30am - Hospitality precincts open​

12.45pm - First race (approx)

6.10pm - Last race (approx)

Free family entertainment

We're bringing some free activities for the younger ones to enjoy between races and, what's more, if they're under 15 years of age they also get FREE general admission. 

Free activities will be on offer on the general admission lawn for younger racegoers to enjoy.

You can bring your own picnic food, unopened non-alcoholic beverages, umbrella, deck chairs and more to help enjoy the day with too.  

 

Just remember you can't BYO alcohol on course, though you can purchase it from our bars providing you're over 18 yrs of age and aren't intoxicated.

 

The Turf on Champagne

Did someone say Bloody Mary?  Returning to the SkyCity New Year's Day Races in 2020 after a successful launch comes The Turf on Champagne - just the spot to get over the night before, and into the day's racing.

Located on the Champagne Lawn, with a Bloody Mary on arrival (for those in need- otherwise we'll sort you out with a beer or sparkling wine), laid-back LIVE music and with brilliant views overlooking the home straight, this is one top-notch location to welcome in the New Year.

Event information

  • You're able to bring your own picnic food & unopened, non-alcoholic beverages into outdoor general admission areas only. BYO food is not permitted in any hospitality precinct or the Ascot Stand

    • There are a number of food outlets in general admission areas and the Ascot Stand. Food is included in other hospitality precinct tickets

  • BYO alcohol is not permitted anywhere on-site however guests aged 18yr+ can purchase alcoholic beverages from bars on site with maximum drink restrictions applying throughout the event

  • There is a dress code in all hospitality precincts and the Ascot Stand (general admission excluded). While we hate turning people away, the dress code will be enforced as required and entry may be refused if it is not adhered to 

  • Tickets are non-refundable

  • We encourage responsible drinking & intoxicated persons will not be granted entry into Ellerslie Racecourse

  • We strongly encourage you to taxi to the track and leave your car at home. Don’t drink and drive, use our preferred taxi supplier Auckland Co-op Taxi who will drop off / pick up at the main entrance. Ring 09 300 3000 to book

  • Ellerslie Racecourse is located close to public transport networks including the Greenlane Train Station which is a 600m walk away

  • Whilst cash-out facilities and eftpos are available, we recommend you bring cash 

  • Children under 15 years are free

  • Free overnight car-parking is available on a first-in, first-served basis
