Track update

The track is rated a Dead 4 at time of writing (Friday afternoon) after 15mms of irrigation was applied last night.

With further drying this afternoon, irrigation will be applied tonight.

Here's what our track manager, Jason Fulford, had to say about the track this afternoon:

Feature race previews

We will look at both the Wallen Concreting Avondale Cup and the AJC Avondale Guineas, as both are key lead up races to the Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup. and Vodafone NZ Derby.

Race 4 | Wallen Concreting Avondale Cup | $120,000 | OPN HCP 2400m | Group 2| 2.12 pm

This year’s renewal certainly lacks depth but does contain a Group 1 winner in Concert Hall and eight-time winner, Our Hail Mary. It’s very difficult to go past Concert Hall given her class but I am taking her on with the lightly weighted, Our Hail Mary. The Allan Sharrock trained mare made up good ground in a stop start Taranaki Cup and was a winner two back in the Marton Cup. I might have this completely wrong but, in my opinion, she brings good enough form, with a 5kg advantage, to beat Concert Hall.

The dangers are of course Concert Hall and Mohaka

Race 7 | AJC Avondale Guineas | $120,000 | 3YO SW 2100m | Group 2| 4.00 pm

The final lead up to the Vodafone New Zealand Derby, this year’s AJC Avondale Guineas is full of quality and depth. The speed map (contained within Track Chat) suggests there will be plenty of speed which should set it up for the 1000 Guineas winner, The Perfect Pink. The Jamie Richards filly was a fast finishing second in the Waikato Guineas, and with a stronger speed likely in this, she looks extremely hard to beat.

The dangers include Tutukaka and La Crique
