Dunstan Feeds Stayers Championship preview

While it's not one of tomorrow's Group races, the Dunstan Feeds Stayers Championship Final will be one to watch after a series of qualifying races have brought you some of the country's best stayers to Ellerslie tomorrow.

In its 23rd year, the Dunstan Feeds Stayers Championship is made up of 17 qualifying races where horses earn points so that they can make the field for the 2400m $100,000 final which is to be run here at Ellerslie tomorrow as part of our SkyCity New Year’s Day Races.

The series is for progressive stayers with the winner of the final being exempt from the ballot in March’s Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup.

The Ralph Manning-trained, Because, was the highest points earner through the qualifying races and takes his place in tomorrow’s final.

Cambridge-based Stephen Marsh trains the favourite, Chakana, who looks very hard to beat after her impressive win at Te Rapa at her last start.

You can’t write about the Dunstan Feeds Stayers Championship without acknowledging the owner of Dunstan Feeds, David Smith.

David, through his company, has not just been a great supporter of this series but is a significant contributor to the industry here in New Zealand as well.

David and his family will be oncourse at Ellerslie tomorrow to witness the Dunstan Feeds Stayers Championship Final and we hope you'll all join them in cheering the field home.
