Celebrating the Great Northern | A ride down memory lane: Ross Coles, clerk of the course

With our history spanning over 160 years, we thought it high time to ask a few (not so old!) friends of Auckland Racing Club (ARC) to recall their favourite memories of racing here at Ellerslie.

Today we chat to our clerk of the course, Ross Coles, about his favourite memory.

Says Ross...

"My favourite memory at Ellerslie is due to a horse called Brockton. He was given to our family to be taught to jump after showing not that much promise as a racehorse.

"After a season of pony club and hunting with us, Brockton was taken to the Pakuranga Hunt Point to Point where he acquitted himself admirably and sealed his fate as a jumper.

"Fast forward to 1971 and Brockton provided us with a thrill when he took out the Great Northern Steeplechase.

"Then, in 1972, he went one better and won both the Great Northern Hurdle and the Great Northern Steeplechase.

"It was a real buzz to have been instrumental in the jumping education of this great horse."
