Volpe Veloce – Westbury Classic – Saturday, 26 January 2019

"Those that were at Ellerslie on our New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Million night will remember the scintillating last 200 metres that Volpe Veloce put in to beat Sleeping Beauty narrowly on the line.

"James McDonald, the rider of Sleeping Beauty, found the trial and on the turn was challenging the leader.

"Shortly after, Sleeping Beauty dashed clear and looked set for victory until Volpe Veloce stormed home to beat her in the last stride.

"Not surprisingly, Volpe Veloce recorded the fastest last 800m, 600m, 400m and 200m of the race."

Probabeel – Karaka Million 2yo – Saturday, 26 January 2019

"Those that liked Probabeel prior to the Karaka Million 2yo would've had a few misgivings after the Savabeel filly drew the outside barrier. "The 1200-metre start at Ellerslie is one of the trickiest in the country and drawing wide can be a significant disadvantage.

"Not for Probabeel though. While she was never closer than three wide, she did have cover. Opie Bosson was patient, producing her at the 300-metre mark.

"From there she powered away to win comfortably."

Melody Belle - Bonecrusher New Zealand Stakes – Saturday, 9 March 2019

"Melody Belle had taken all before her in races up to 1600 metres. However, the query was whether the daughter of Commands could be effective over 2000 metres. "The race had been touted as a match race between Melody Belle and Danzdanzdance, and this is how it turned out.

"Both mares paired off at the top of the straight with Melody Belle edging clear in the last 50 metres.

"It was a class win by Melody Belle beating a proven 2000-metre horse such as Danzdanzdance."

Glory Days – Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup – Saturday, 9 March 2019

"Two weeks prior, Glory Days had narrowly beaten Blue Breeze in the Coca-Cola Avondale Cup, which was run on a Good 3 track. "For Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup Day, Glory Days was faced with a Heavy 10 track after significant rain on race morning.

"However, the track held no fears for the daughter of Red Giant. Sam Collett settled back near last, looped the field and proved too strong for Five To Midnight and Blue Breeze.

"It was a very strong staying performance from Glory Days, which was franked later in the season when she ran a very solid third in the Sydney Cup."
