Things You Might Not Know: Irvines Great Northern Steeplechase & Schweppes Great Northern Hurdle

Irvines Great Northern Day features two prestige jumping races - the Schweppes Great Northern Hurdle and the Irvines Great Northern Steeplechase.

Irvines Great Northern Steeplechase

  • The first Great Northern Steeplechase was run in 1885

  • The fastest race time was 7:39:35 and was run by Ballycastle in 1978 (the slowest time was 9:04:82)

  • The oldest horse to win was Irish Coment in 1937 at age 13 and the youngest horse was 4-year-old Belle in 1886

  • Two horses have won the race 3 times. The first was Hunterville (in 1983, 1984 and 1985) and the second was Hypnotize (in 2007, 2008 and 2010)

Schweppes Great Northern Hurdle

  • The Great Northern Hurdle was also first run in 1885

  • Over the years, only four female jockeys have won (Michelle Hopkins in 2001, Laura Tunnell in 2005, Shelley Houston in 2010 as well as 2012 and most recently Kayla Veenendaal in 2013)

  • No horse has won more than twice (eight have won twice)
