To start by stating the obvious, flat racing is where horses race around a flat course (this is the most
common type of racing in New Zealand) and jumps racing features obstacles throughout the course that horses need to jump over.
The obstacles in jumps racing are hurdles, fences or ditches and in New Zealand are categorised into steeplechase (the bigger fences) and hurdles (the smaller ones).
Flat racing is held at Ellerslie during every raceday for the season which runs August – June whereas jumps races are only run between May – September.

Saturday 9 September – Irvines Great Northern Day
